Store associates help prepare fresh fruit for runners after the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K race.

Strong traditions build strong communities, and that’s why Ocala, Florida, Winn-Dixie Store No. 2228 supported the YMCA’s 20thannual Turkey Trot 5K this Thanksgiving holiday.

More than 2,200 runners filled the Marion County YMCA parking lot and fields to participate in the Thanksgiving tradition. The annual 5k walk/run includes an outdoor cycling class along with a dance party and activities for the whole family. There was also a 10k certified course and kids event, which was new for the race’s 20thanniversary.

The Turkey Trot raises money for the YMCA scholarship program, which provides assistance for individuals in the community to partake in the organization’s programs.

Store associates from the store volunteered at the Turkey Trot by putting together race packets and passing out Winn-Dixie bags that were filled with water, energy bars and fresh fruit at the finish line to support their local customers as they trotted to the finish line. Tents were setup across the parking lot for runners to boost their energy before and after the race.

“We are thrilled to support the annual Turkey Trot each year that allows youth development through programs,” said Store Director Eric Taylor. “We were able to raise funds for a great cause and make sure every runner had the proper nutrition.”

The Thanksgiving tradition is the largest race in Ocala, with more than 2,000 runners every year. Community members and business partners look forward to another successful Turkey Trot in 2016.
