The three Bi-Lo Holdings banners joined together to raise awareness and funds to fight hunger during the holiday season with the 2014 Holiday Hunger Relief Program from Nov. 19 – Dec. 23. By encouraging customers to give a dollar at the register, our stores were able to collectively donate $261,935 to regional Feeding America affiliated food banks. A few of the high-performing stores say their success came from diligently asking customers to donate.

“Every cashier we have is trained to ask each customer for a donation,” said Edward Jones, area manager at Winn-Dixie store No. 528. His store raised $5,682 by simply remembering to ask customers if they’d like to give a dollar.

“It’s one of the main things we talk to customers about while they’re checking out,” said Jones.

The Charleston region raised a total of $93,965 by taking things a step further than just asking customers to donate. They challenged associates with a 2-liter bottle of soda on each register.

“We made sure all the cashiers asked customers to donate with a 2-liter drink on the register where if the cashier doesn’t ask, the customer gets the drink,” said Terry Stoudemire, service area manager at BI-LO store No. 5655.

"That’s how we knew who was asking and who wasn’t,” said Stoudemire. Associates who didn’t give away the soda were honored with a star on their nametags.

Stores in BI-LO stores in Columbia, South Carolina and Chattanooga, Tennessee participated in food drives to help raise funds during the Holiday Hunger Relief Program. Share Your Christmas was an all-day food drive held in downtown Chattanooga in partnership with WRCB-TV Channel 3 News. Store directors presented a check for $10,000 to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank from funds raised to date with the Holiday Hunger Relief Program and encouraged community members to visit BI-LO to donate through Dec. 23. Store directors also encouraged community members to donate at the Share Your Holiday all-day food drive held in downtown Columbia in partnership with WACH Fox News.
