The 77th Shrine Bowl, featuring the best high school players from North and South Carolina, was a nail-biter, but the South Carolina team came out on top.
BI-LO co-sponsored The Dec. 21 game in Spartanburg, S.C., which pitted all-star high school football players from the Carolinas in an ongoing state-versus-state rivalry.
In what some have called the best Shrine Bowl Classic game in 77 years, South Carolina scored the game-winning touchdown with 16 seconds remaining to take home the coveted title and bragging rights for the year.
Through the efforts of five local shrine temples and the support of sponsors such as BI-LO, a check for more than $1.4 million was presented to Shriners Hospital at halftime.
“BI-LO was proud to be part of the 2013 Shrine Bowl Classic, because it not only provided fans with an action-packed night, but also because it supports such a worthy cause as well as allows these athletes that have worked so hard all year to be center stage,” said Sam Blaiss, vice president of the central region for BI-LO stores.
Since the first game in 1937, more than $75 million has been raised for Shriners Hospitals. The organization’s mission is to provide the highest quality care to children with special healthcare needs and conduct research that improves quality of care and quality of life.
