Winn-Dixie associates, family members and friends came together at Metropolitan Park in Jacksonville, Fla. for the First Coast Heart Walk Sept. 21.

About 80 Winn-Dixie associates, their friends and families, proudly wearing red Winn-Dixie T-shirts, joined about 18,000 other participants in the First Coast Heart Walk at Metropolitan Park in Jacksonville, Fla. Sept. 21.

The Winn-Dixie associates and their families participated in the walk to raise money and awareness for heart disease through the work of the American Heart Association.

Before the walk, there was a carnival-like atmosphere in the downtown Jacksonville park, and participants gathered for pre- walk activities including a “top dog” contest, photo booth, and breakfast before participants set off on the 3-mile walk around the River City.

The American Heart Association’s mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of all Americans. In fact, someone dies from cardiovascular disease every 39 seconds. Heart disease also kills more women than all forms of cancer combined according to the American Heart Association.

“Winn-Dixie encourages our associates to live a healthy life every day to prevent diseases like heart disease,” said Denise Myers, event participation coordinator for Winn-Dixie. “We try to work very closely with organizations like the American Heart Association to provide awareness and education not only to our associates but to the communities that we serve.”

Winn-Dixie also participated in the event by donating 15,000 water bottles and 110 cases of bananas as well as raising $12,542 for the cause. Overall, the event has raised more than $1 million for the Heart Association.
