Winn-Dixie cares passionately about the communities in which customers live and the associates who serve them, and one example of this shone through recently when a store associate sacrificed his paycheck to support the needy in his community.

Winn-Dixie store No. 490 associate Clay Smith, who is a member of the United States Marine Corps, saw the March Community Donation Program as a great opportunity to support the Manna Food Pantry in Pensacola, Florida. At the end of the program, Smith, selflessly donated his entire paycheck to the Manna Food Pantry in Pensacola.

Manna Food Pantry was the organization that all Pensacola stores supported during the program through which customers and associates could make donations at store cash registers. Manna works closely in partnership with Winn-Dixie to feed local families experiencing hardship.

"On behalf of the Manna Food Pantry, we are so proud to partner with Winn-Dixie to give back to our community," said DeDe Flounlacker, Executive Director of the Manna Food Pantry. “Through our long-standing relationship, Winn-Dixie has been a strong partner. Mr. Smith’s generosity is a perfect example of the community stepping up to significantly impact a deserving cause."

Smith said he accepted his Winn-Dixie job with the intention of giving back. He was a Winn-Dixie customer and decided to become an associate while undergoing physical therapy for an injury.

"I grew up in grocery and giving back is very important to me," said Smith. "Winn-Dixie and the Pensacola community truly cares about those in need. I was just happy to support those efforts."

Through Smith’s charitable donation, the generosity of customers and the hard work of associates as well as the support of the region leadership team, Winn-Dixie’s New Orleans region raised a significant amount of money and awareness of those in need.
