In a continued effort to support our local food bank and help eliminate hunger in Palm Beach County, Winn-Dixie store No. 212 in Royal Palm Beach, Florida teamed up with a local construction company, The Weitz Company, to support Palm Beach County Food Bank’s Third Annual CANstruction event.

CANstruction is an international charity that challenges architects, designers and builders to create works of art made entirely out of canned and/or packaged foods, which are later donated to local food banks. Over several weeks, members of The Weitz Company built a miniature replica of the French monument the Arc de Triomphe, completely from Winn-Dixie Own Brands products.

Store Director Steve Lee has worked closely with the Palm Beach County Food Bank for numerous years, donating much-needed items to be distributed to his neighbors in need. The 2015 CANstruction event is the first year Lee and his team participated, coordinating with the construction company to order more than $10,000 worth of Winn-Dixie Own Brands canned goods to build the Arc de Triomphe. Store No. 212 also donated a $200 gift card to the cause, further helping to stock the organization’s shelves with nutritious food.

“We are always happy to partner with the Palm Beach County Food Bank in support of their mission of fighting food insecurity in our community,” he said. “I am proud to see Winn-Dixie showcased at such a beloved event and to know that our products are going to serve those in need.”

The Winn-Dixie branded structure was on display until June 21 at Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida for the community to enjoy. After the CANstruction event was over, approximately 30,000 pounds of food was donated to the Palm Beach County Food Bank.

The Weitz Company Project Coordinator Bernardita Morgan says she was proud of what The Weitz Company and Winn-Dixie were able to accomplish together for the community.

“We must band together to help eliminate hunger in our communities and we are proud to partner with Winn-Dixie to do our part,” she said. “Not only were we able to construct a beautiful structure for people to enjoy for two weeks, we were able to make sure that thousands of families didn’t have to worry about where their next meal was going to come from.”
