A few weeks ago, Customers of BI-LO No. 5282 in Columbia, S.C. got a chance to live football dreams -- holding college football’s Heisman Trophy or slipping a Super Bowl championship ring onto their finger.
Thanks to BI-LO and BC Powder, those fantasies came true for BI-LO customers when University of South Carolina standout player George Rogers, winner of the 1980 Heisman trophy and later player for the Super Bowl-winning Washington Redskins, brought both trophies to the store for them to see. The former running back was the first pick in the 1981 NFL draft and he finished his pro football career in 1988 playing for Super Bowl champion Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII.
His appearance at store No. 5282 was appropriate – his alma mater is located in the same city and the store’s logo sign features a Gamecock, the university’s mascot. Rogers is the Gamecocks’ all-time rushing leader and his No. 38 jersey was retired at the end of his senior year. He won the Heisman in 1980 after leading the nation in rushing with 1,894 yards.
“It was a very successful event,” said store director Ramesh Prasad, who has worked for BI-LO for nearly 28 years. “The BC Powder event manager said it was one of the biggest crowds at an event like this he’s ever seen.”
Rogers, who lives in nearby Irmo, S.C., spent about 90 minutes meeting football fans outside the store, posing for photos and letting them get their hands on the iconic awards for football excellence. He awarded one lucky fan two tickets to the Gamecocks’ game against the University of Florida.
