Girl Scouts at Winn-Dixie store No. 1504 in Slidell, La. help raise awareness about local hunger.

Four local Girl Scouts greeted customers outside of Winn-Dixie Store No. 1504 in Slidell, Louisiana Aug. 2 to raise awareness about hunger in their own neighborhoods.

Using handmade signs, the girls encouraged shoppers to give back by donating at checkout.

This partnership grew out of the store’s strong ties to community leaders, including a leader involved in the Girl Scouts Louisiana East, who sought to support Winn-Dixie’s Summer Hunger Relief program benefiting local children.

The partners worked together to put on a food drive in which customers could conveniently purchase a Louisiana staple -- red beans and rice -- at checkout and then drop the items off at the Girl Scout booth outside.

The goal was to collect more than 750 pounds of food for the First Baptist Church to distribute back into the community, another ongoing partner of Store No. 1504. The Girl Scout troop and the store far exceeded their goal, raising more than 1,200 pounds of food in just one day.

“We are thrilled with the results of this food drive,” said Mike Piazza, store director at Winn-Dixie No. 1504. “People don’t always realize it, but even in the St. Tammany parish, children are in need of food and have to do without. It’s important that, as a local grocer, we do our part to raise awareness and give back to our neighbors in need.”

The New Orleans Region will soon support Girl Scout troops on a larger scale, including partnering to sponsor the area’s Annual Women of Distinction event in November.
