As a team who respects each other, Bi-Lo Holdings is proud to recognize the expanding role of leading women within our organization. And all of us, throughout the company, are especially proud each year to hear about the women in Bi-Lo Holdings store and corporate leadership who are selected to receive Progressive Grocer magazine’s Top Women in Grocery awards.
Several of Bi-Lo Holdings' leading women will take home the award this year. Their names are to be announced by next week.
The magazine’s award is in its ninth year, and awards are given in three categories – store directors, corporate executives and “rising stars.”
Progressive Grocer Chief Content Editor Meg Major oversees the Top Women in Grocery program. She said the award has grown to be at the forefront of recognizing how women are increasingly achieving leadership excellence in the grocery industry.
“Top Women in Grocery has become an internal reward and recognition for many companies that are acutely aware there are opportunities for growth in career paths for women,” she said.
Although the grocery industry has historically been male-dominated, women have been making great strides – most notbly in recent years, she said.
“We’re seeing more store managers – much more powerful representation of women at all rungs of the industry,” she said.
Major said dynamic change has been happening in recent years in grocery company departments such as warehouse, logistics, store construction and maintenance, to name a few. Opportunities still exist in executive ranks and on boards of directors, she noted.
“There is still massive room for improvement,” she said. “But with just a casual look at business, we still find a push for women leaders.”
And Major said she’s proud that the Top Women in Grocery award has come to symbolize that push.
“It’s a true, pure form of recognition and something we feel really strongly about,”she said.
