As 2013 drew to a close, many dedicated South and West Florida Winn-Dixie associates worked with local schools and organizations, giving back to their communities to make the holidays more special for their neighbors.

Winn-Dixie store No. 291 in Aventura, Fla. joined in on the Hanukkah holiday to support Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, donating items to the Hanukkah Shabbat Celebration on Nov. 29. Store Director Cory Weissman worked with the organization to help serve more than 350 families.

To help bring Christmas cheer to Holiday, Fla., Store Director Bob Damm and a team from Winn-Dixie store No. 644 joined staff and families of Sunray Elementary School for a Winter Wonderland event Dec. 13. Students decorated stockings and cookies before enjoying festive reindeer games and more than 150 attendees enjoyed sandwiches and cupcakes from Winn-Dixie.

In Immokalee, Fla., Winn-Dixie store No. 751 Store Director Jeremy Evert and his team provided their services during the Redlands Christian Migrant Association Toy Drive Dec. 14 to help local children have a happy holiday. Winn-Dixie donated buns and associates grilled hamburgers and hot dogs for more than 1,200 event attendees. All funds went directly toward providing gifts for children in need.

On Dec. 20, two Winn-Dixie stores provided lunch for nearby school staff as a thank-you to local educators. Marc Sheppard, director of Winn-Dixie store No. 640 in Dunedin, Fla., visited Plumb Elementary School and James Doyle, store director at Winn-Dixie store No. 671 in St. Petersburg, Fla., visited Westgate Elementary School to treat teachers and staff.

Winn-Dixie store No. 649 Store Director Mark Tunstill and Receiving Lead Sandy Pomeroy worked with St. James United Methodist Church of St. Petersburg to help fill the church’s food pantry and to make sure local families had a meal on their table this holiday season. Winn-Dixie donated 16 turkeys and other food items that could be used to make a complete holiday meal for those in need.
