Winn-Dixie Store No. 438 in Columbus, Ga worked to benefit the local affiliate for House of Heroes when the store helped to host the “Take Pride in the Southside” event Sept. 14.

House of Heroes is a non-profit organization serving the nation's military and public safety veterans (and their spouses) who are disabled, living on a fixed income, or facing other challenges.

The Take Pride in the Southside initiative is part of an effort to revitalize the city’s Southside area, boost businesses in the community and support a community organization. The event began about 10 years ago with a march through the city.

The event drew hundreds of guests, including city representatives, principals and local community leaders. Winn-Dixie District Director Richard McGough presented House of Heroes with a $2,000 donation.

In the store’s parking lot, guests could enjoy a bounce house, a hula hoop contest, a bean bag toss, and performances by the Spencer High School band and dance team. The parking lot was also the spot for event speakers, entertainment and check presentations. Inside the store, customers participated in a Cake Walk contest for $10 Winn-Dixie gift cards.

“This was the perfect opportunity for us to connect not only with our customers, but also with leaders in our community, and build relationships that we will be able to grow through future partnership opportunities,” McGough said. “This event facilitated great conversations and we are excited to show our community that we are proud to be in the Southside.”
