Several BI-LO stores in the Augusta, Georgia area volunteered their time May 16 to participate in the Clarks Hill Fish for Life Foundation Kid’s Fishing Rodeo.

The Clarks Hill “Fish for Life” Foundation is a nonprofit organization in Augusta, Georgia that helps protect children against neglect and abuse. The organization started in 2010 when several bass fishermen decided to raise money combining doing what they enjoy most: fishing and helping the less fortunate.

The foundation hosts two open team bass tournaments per year as well as two kid’s fishing rodeos which are held at the Wildwood Park in Columbia, Georgia on Clarks Hill Lake. All of the funds raised through the events go directly back to the foundation to help the children.

For the second year, BI-LO donated lunch for children and parents taking part in the fishing rodeo, providing a hamburger and hot dog cookout. And eleven BI-LO directors from various stores came to help volunteer, cook, and support the organization in any way possible. At the new BI-LO cookie decorating station, children decorated sugar cookies with icing and sprinkles of their choice.

The outpouring of assistance from the community, sponsors and volunteers allowed the foundation to help a patient travel to receive treatment for an illness, assist a local family after the loss of their home in a house fire and award scholarships to two deserving students.

“We all had a blast volunteering at this wonderful event,” said BI-LO store No. 5276 Assistant Director Johnny Brantley. “It’s not every day that we get to go out into the community and help make a difference. It’s also wonderful to spend time with co-workers while we are all making a difference!”
