A pint-sized version of a BI-LO grocery store in Greenville, S.C. enables children to learn how to be smart shoppers while having fun playing.

The interactive children’s BI-LO Market is part of the Children’s Museum of the Upstate, the seventh-largest children’s museum in the country and 10th-largest in the world.

BI-LO was among the first companies to back the museum, supporting the organization six years before it opened in 2009.

The child-sized store is a guest favorite to the more than 100,000 guests who visit each year. Featuring deli, bakery and butcher counters, shopping carts, check-out scanners and shelves stocked with items that include the Southern Home Brand, the exhibit teaches children about household budgeting, creating healthy menus and compiling shopping lists. The market is also home to the “What’s Cookin’ Test Kitchen,” a workshop area where children and families take part in real cooking experiences facilitated by staff and guest chefs.

The exhibit also allows young visitors to play the role of a butcher or baker working behind the counter. Each child receives his or her own BI-LO BONUSCARD made especially for the museum.

“The BI-LO Market is a guest favorite, offering wonderful educational opportunities like planning healthy meals and working with a budget,” said Diana Berti, director of development for the museum. “BI-LO’s ‘What’s Cooking in the Kitchen’ offers popular CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) cooking classes for families and is used frequently in our camps and after-school programs.”
