Winn-Dixie stores in West and Central Florida help the Gulf Ridge Council of Boy Scouts of America with an annual food drive.

Winn-Dixie stores in six counties throughout West and Central Florida opened their doors to help local Boy Scouts collect food for the annual “Scouting for Food” program.

Sixteen stores in Citrus,Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties helped the Boy Scouts with food collections. Winn-Dixie also printed 100,000 flyers for the Boy Scouts to hang on doors in their neighborhoods. The door hangers requested that residents leave food at their doorstep on a specific day. The scouts returned on that day to collect the food and deliver it to local food banks.

This was the most successful year in the 30-year history of the Scouting for Food program, organizers said.

“With Winn-Dixie’s help, the program collected 30 percent more food than last year,” said Jeff Rock, Boy Scouts of America Gulf Ridge Council field service director. “In total, more than 80,000 pounds of food is projected to be collected, with 25,000 pounds of that donated at participating Winn-Dixie stores.”

The Scouting for Food program is designed to collect food to resupply local food pantries following the holiday season with the help of 10,000 Scouting families in the Gulf Ridge Council area.

Rock said he asked Winn-Dixie for assistance because of the company’s culture of helping the communities it serves through hunger relief efforts.

“We know that Winn-Dixie is very community-oriented and puts a big emphasis on providing food for the hungry,” said Rock. “Those initiatives seemed to match this program.”
