Little League teams from throughout the Southeast came to Lexington, S.C. Aug. 8-14 to square off in the Dixie Youth World Series.

Lexington, South Carolina became the baseball capital of the South when the city hosted the 2014 Dixie Youth World Series Aug. 8-14.

Three divisions, consisting of 36 teams from 11 Southeastern states, went head-to-head at the 13-field Lexington Sports Complex. The city was chosen because it hosted a 12-team tournament played there in 1995 and a 16-team tournament in 2010.

BI-LO store No. 5135 served as the official grocery store sponsor for the week-long event. Store Director Greg Cupstid and associates provided breakfast for 500 players, coaches and families at a Sunday morning worship service held at River Bluff High School, where USC Head Baseball Coach Chad Holbrook was the guest of honor.

The store also provided cold beverages and a variety of snacks to hydrate and fuel players throughout the week. Special birthday cakes were made for players who were celebrating during the tournament and BI-LO hats and T-shirts were distributed to the 8,000 to 10,000 people in attendance.

“Playing in a tournament like this is every little boy’s dream and one that they will remember for the rest of their lives,” said Cupstid. “We were honored to participate and hope that BI-LO will be part

of those memories.”

Aside from supporting the local community, the tournament hit home for Greg and his wife, Terri who threw out the ceremonial first pitch on the field named in honor of her father, Eddie Tronco who died in 2004.

Cupstid says that Lexington was already awarded the 2015 Dixie Youth World Series and that the store looks forward to participating again.
