During last year’s inaugural scan program, 18 Winn-Dixie stores chose the Miami Children’s Hospital as beneficiary for donations. And on Feb. 19, 52 Winn-Dixie stores will benefit the organization in the second scan program.

The hospital makes a positive impact on thousands of South Florida families every year. On Jan. 23, District Director Jorge Cabo and a group of store directors visited the organization’s Palmetto Bay Outpatient Center to see firsthand how the hospital serves its community.

The team met Diane Breslow, whose son’s visit to Miami Children’s Hospital saved his life after a virus attacked his heart. She hailed the hospital staff’s quick thinking, passionate care and outstanding services that allowed her son to be in good health years later.

“Listening to Diane tell her story absolutely motivated our team, knowing the funds we raise could help save a child’s life,” said Jorge Cabo, District Director of Winn-Dixie Miami Region District One. “Having our store directors visit this facility to see, hear and feel the impact Miami Children’s hospital makes on the community is very inspirational.”

Hospital staff members guided small groups of store directors through various areas, including the speech, mental and physical therapy departments, the sports injury department and the hospital’s “Early Steps” program, dedicated to serving children from infant to three years old.

“It really puts a smile on your face when you get to work with a dedicated partner such as Winn-Dixie,” said Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation Development Director Melissa Wetzle. “The feedback we received from the store directors and their do-what-it-takes attitudes toward the scan program really showed their passion for helping Miami Children’s Hospital make an even greater impact in South Florida.”
