Fire trucks, ambulances, and many dedicated individuals filled the parking lot of Winn Dixie store No. 2230 in Palm Bay, Fla. Nov. 16thas the Palm Bay Firefighters Community Benevolent Inc. hosted the 2013 Ladder Climb for the Children’s Hunger Project.
In addition to educating children on fire safety, the event raised money for a great cause through the purchase of gift cards that will be used by The Children’s Hunger Project to purchase food for distribution to local children. Customers bought gift cards in increments of $5 or $10 and then brought the cards to firefighters in the parking lot. One of the firefighters then climbed the 100-foot aerial ladder truck, carrying a symbolic bag of food for each gift card purchased.
“The Children’s Hunger Project is a wonderful local organization, and one that Winn-Dixie Palm Bay is lucky to have a wonderful partnership with,” said Beth Gardner, Winn-Dixie assistant store director. “Many school children go home each weekend with little or no food to eat and we want to help alleviate that and spread awareness in the community.”
The Children’s Hunger Project is a local charity whose mission is to provide school children in Brevard County with weekend food backpacks. The program is specifically aimed at elementary school students who are experiencing critical periods of growth and development. This event raised more than $1,600 dollars in one day, exceeding last year’s goal.
