Recently BI-LO’s Charleston district presented the Be a Mentor second annual Going Places Gala, kicking off BI-LO’s involvement with the organization.

Be a Mentor’s mission is to ensure all youth in the Lowcountry have a caring role model and advocate in their life to empower them to reach their full potential. The targeted youth mentoring program strives to enable youth to develop positive relations with caring adults and build long-lasting friendships.

Mentoring helps young people gain the skills needed to address personal, school and home issues that may discourage them from reaching their full potential.Mentors who participate in this program spend just one hour a week mentoring children throughout the Charleston area giving each child hope and the opportunity to reach their potential. Be a Mentor has recruited and trained thousands of mentors to become passionate volunteers with at-risk youth and the organization works every day to increase the number of participants.

The gala event included live music, silent auction, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and a program honoring local community members who inspire and support mentoring in the Lowcountry. Chris Mathis, director of store No. 5448 in Charleston, South Carolina introduced the first honoree of the night, North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Sumney.

“This organization is very passionate about helping the youth of our community, something that is so important to growing a stronger community here in Charleston,” said Mathis. “We support organizations every day, but this is one of those organizations that you can truly see a change and how they touch so many.”

There were several key individuals from the community who were honored with awards for their dedication to Be a Mentor. BI-LO is looking forward to helping Be a Mentor grow in the greater Charleston community.
