With real-life weather bringing Arctic temperatures to North Carolina, BI-LO store No. 5603 in Hendersonville, N.C. supported the 6thAnnual Polar Plunge on Feb. 22.

Local residents braved freezing water to raise $25,000 – with 100 percent of the money benefitting Meals On Wheels of Asheville and Buncombe County.

“I was asked to be a sponsor for the Polar Plunge and felt the event was a great way for our BI-LO store to help our community,” said Leigh Youngblood, store director at No. 5603. “Alleviating hunger is a cause close to us at BI-LO, and it was great to watch so many people come together with the same goal in mind.”

As a first-time sponsor of the event, BI-LO’s contributions provided three months of daily hot meals for one of the area’s senior residents. In all, the Meals On Wheels of Asheville and Buncombe County chapter feeds more than 500 elderly and homebound people.

In the past six years, the Polar Plunge has raised close to $100,000 for the local Meals On Wheels efforts and has grown to become one of the leading plunge events in the western part of the state. Through support of the event, BI-LO store No. 5603 was able to further the fight against hunger in the Asheville market.
