Branches volunteers enjoy breakfast, provided by Winn-Dixie, during their day of community service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Jan. 19, Winn-Dixie partnered with Branches, a division of the Southeast District of the United Methodist Church focused on developing programs that help eliminate poverty and empower its neighbors, during their annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. As a long-time partner, Winn-Dixie supported the yearly service project by providing breakfast and lunch for more than 250 volunteers in South Miami, Florida and Florida City, Florida, who work to make their communities better places through various service projects, including the fifth annual “Florida City, Love Yourself” event, as well as the third annual “SoMi Lights MLK Day of Service” in South Miami.

Throughout the day, volunteers worked tirelessly to revitalize three homes in the Florida City community, as well as provide helping hands at nearby Homestead Middle School on various maintenance projects. Those who donated their time in South Miami helped clean up nearby parks, as well as paint, landscape and beautify the area around Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Branches South Miami location.

Branches Director of Development Isabelle Pike says their Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service projects are not possible without the support of corporate partners like Winn-Dixie.

“Winn-Dixie’s support of our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service project is a heartwarming display of their commitment to the communities they serve,” she said. “Bringing our neighbors together to honor an American hero has become a yearly tradition, and we are honored to have Winn-Dixie join us in making our communities a better place.”
