More than 20 Bi-Lo Holdings associates helped to show that they care passionately about their community March 29 when they participated in the Mt. Acosta Classic endurance race.
Despite the event’s name, the race, which featured running and bicycling events, was in downtown Jacksonville, Florida and participants repeatedly scaled a bridge crossing the St. Johns River, and didn’t involve an actual mountain.
The objective of the third annual race was torun or bike as many laps as possible across the Acosta Bridge, which is about a third of a mile in length with an incline toward the center. In past years, participants have competed to see who can complete the challenge with the best time. In the past two years, the event has raised more than $22,000, with all the proceeds going to the Jared Bynum Scholarship Foundation for Jacksonville’s Landon Middle School.
“This event features both cycling and running on the Acosta Bridge, making it unique and challenging for participants and all proceeds raised go to the Jared Bynum Scholarship Fund,” said Gena Star, a Bi-Lo Holdings Systems Engineer who was an event organizer. “This year’s event had beautiful weather and a great turnout from Bi-Lo Holdings. Next year’s event, we are going to strive to double the participation and throw in some team events.”
