The Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge in Gainesville, Fla. on Aug. 27 played host as more than 100 caregivers, patients, survivors, staff and volunteers lit up the night for the facility’s first Hope Lodge Relay for Life.

The event celebrated life and hope while honoring those who have been affected by cancer. Since opening in 1986, the Hope Lodge has helped fight cancer by providing free lodging to cancer patients and their caregivers during outpatient cancer treatments. Last year, the lodge provided more than 12,000 nights of lodging, saving patients about $1.2 million.

The event kicked off with a mini-relay walk for survivors, followed by a caregiver walk. It included a photo booth, cake walk, live music, dancing and a special gift shop. Winn-Dixie participated in the Relay for Life event as a silver sponsor, donating to the fight against cancer as well as providing dinner for all the wonderful individuals who participated. Including sponsors, this inaugural event raised more than $10,000 for the Hope Lodge program.

“The American Cancer Society Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge is so excited to be partnering with Winn-Dixie for this annual event,” said Nancy Dohn, Hope Lodge director. “With our team and Winn-Dixie’s support, we can make a huge difference in the lives of cancer patients.”
