The Georgia Watermelon Queens have been busy throughout July, visting Georgia BI-LO and Harveys supermarkets and enthusiastically giving customers information about the health benefits of watermelon. Of course, they’ve also been providing free samples of the juicy, fresh summer fruit.
Reigning 2014 Georgia Watermelon Queen Jennifer Eadie is from Sylvester, GA and is a recent graduate of Wesleyan College. Eadie has plenty of watermelon knowledge because her family has ties to watermelon farming.
Watermelon is a unique fruit because it is made up of only water and natural sugars, making it a nutrient dense food that provides a high amount of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants for a low amount of calories. Possible health benefits of watermelon include asthma prevention, blood pressure, cancer, digestion, hydration, muscle soreness, and skin improvements.
Eadie stopped at BI-LO store No. 5567 in Statesboro, Ga. and met local customers as well as helped promote the store’s brand-new pharmacy that opened the same week as her visit. Eadie and the store’s pharmacists encouraged customers to take a stand for their health and learn about natural health benefits from everyday food.
“We had a great time at the Statesboro BI-LO location and the new pharmacy was beautiful!” said Samantha Tankersley Kilgore, Georgia Watermelon Association Promotions Coordinator. “We were honored to be able to partner with BI-LO and Harveys for the visits and help spread the word about the new pharmacy.”
Eadie and her team also visited Harveys store No. 1697 in Americus, Ga. and store No. 1627 in Cordele, Ga.
