BI-LO representatives joined WDEF News 12 to honor local educators at the 2015 Golden Apple Awards at the Chattanooga Trade and Convention Center May 7.

This was the seventh year BI-LO sponsored the program that recognizes teachers across southeast Tennessee and northwest Georgia who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of their students.

Over the past eight months, weekly winners were selected from nominations submitted by students, parents and colleagues, then honored on WDEF News 12 newscasts. A panel of judges then selected finalists and the Teacher of the Year.

This year’s Teacher of the Year was Jill Blackmon, a third grade teacher at East Lake Elementary School in Chattanooga. Finalists included Christina Cryder from Alpine Crest Elementary in Red Bank, Tenn., and Sally Lesperance from Gilbert Elementary in LaFayette, Ga.

BI-LO District Director, Daryl Massey, provided opening remarks, along with Phil Cox, general manager for WDEF News 12 and Dr. Lee McDade, assistant superintendent of Hamilton County Schools.

Blackmon received $500 in BI-LO gift cards for being named Teacher of the Year, and finalists each received $200 in BI-LO gift cards.
