Associates from BI-LO store No. 5741 in Pawleys Island, S.C. gathered May 22 at the Wedgefield Plantation Golf Club for the second annual Scott Marlowe First Tee National School Day Champions Challenge. Children from 11 different elementary and intermediate schools arrived for the day dressed in their best matching golf outfits and ready to learn how to golf.

The First Tee Program aims to impact the lives of young adults by providing an education program that builds character, instills life-enhancing values and promotes healthy choices through golf. The event was special to the program, because it involves the entire Georgetown County School District and children are selected based on high-performing academics.

BI-LO supported the event as the presenting sponsor with a healthy snack station at hole No. 4 complete with bananas, water, apples and raisins to replenish young golfers. BI-LO also provided a surprise visit from Walter’s Pal Becky Broccoli, who gave young golfers “high fives” as they hit the course for the day.

Throughout the day, the children rotated through various golf holes, using plastic golf clubs, tennis balls and other items to learn the basic rules of the game. They also learned many different skills and core values specific to the First Tee Program.

“The First Tee program is a great program for the youth of our community and the lessons they learned at the event will continue to shape and impact the children throughout their lives,” BI-LO District Director Fred DiGregorio said. “Respect, responsibility, courtesy, honesty are all First Tee core values that BI-LO also shares and strives for everyday to give back to our customers and our community, making this event a perfect partnership for the Pawleys Island community.”

In the team competition, Waccamaw Intermediate School won, followed by Andrews Elementary School in second and Coastal Montessori Charter School in third. But at the end of the event, everyone was a winner.
