BI-LO associates visit with residents of East Ridge Retirement Center in East Ridge, Tenn.

Each week, residents of the East Ridge Retirement Center in East Ridge, Tenn., look forward to their scheduled trip to the local BI-LO.

While some are wheelchair bound or rely on a service dog for vision and mobility, for many of the residents, grocery shopping is one of the few tasks that they can enjoy and do on their own. Some 20 to 30 residents arrive every Friday with shopping lists in hand, eager to scan the aisles and chat with the BI-LO associates that they have come to know well.

The associates at BI-LO store No. 5614 enjoy the opportunity to visit with these neighbors each week and to assist them with their grocery needs. Director Myron McCormick and associates recently surprised East Ridge residents by treating them to a full lunch at the center. Residents enjoyed Southern favorites such as fried chicken, potato salad, cole slaw and potato wedges as they swapped stories and chatted with store associates. For dessert, they snacked on sugar free cakes made by the bakery.

McCormick said that the residents were very appreciative of the store’s gesture. “They kept mentioning how grateful they were and how no one had ever done anything like this for them before,” he said. “This was a simple way for us to show our appreciation.”
