Although she has an eight-year background in Community Theater, Senior Accountant Shauntel Robinson says she joined Southeastern Grocers’ Toastmasters Club in the Jacksonville (Florida) Store Support Center to “come out of my shell.”
Though comfortable in stage performances, Shauntel often succumbed to stage fright when it came to public speaking without a character to portray. But joining Toastmasters has helped her to conquer that fear, she said.
“Toastmasters has fueled my creativity, caused me to have a sharper ear, and has provided me with feedback that has and will continue to enhance my public speaking,” she said.
She said her experience sharpening her public speaking skills with her Toastmasters Club has helped to build her self-confidence. She’s recently won a humorous speech competition in the SEG Toastmasters Club and has also won in an area contest. On Saturday, Robinson will take on competitors from around Toastmasters’ Division A, which includes more than 25 clubs from throughout the Jacksonville region. The regional Toastmasters Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest is in Jacksonville, Florida Oct. 10 at 9 a.m. in the Everbank Auditorium, second floor, 301 W. Bay St. Click here to register to attend.Registration is $10 and includes brunch. Southeastern Grocers associates who attend also will receive a ticket to win prizes.
Robinson said she recommends Toastmasters to anyone who wants to get better at speaking in public.
“It is a powerful tool for both professional and personal development,” she said. “It is an environment conducive to becoming a better speaker/listener while building self confidence and gaining knowledge about a plethora of topics – AND we ‘have fun doing it!’
