BI-LO and Winn-Dixie stores throughout the Southeast celebrated back-to-school with teachers and students by hosting events and donating school supplies.

The BI-LO teams in Martinez, Ga. store Nos. 5103 and store 5625 teamed up for a special back to school gift for all Columbia County School District teachers. The two stores gave $500 in $10 BI-LO gift cards for each teacher in the entire district. The store made the donation as a warm welcome back to the teachers and because associates wanted to do something special for the educators who do so much for the youth of the local community.

“We wanted to let all the teachers know that their local BI-LO appreciates all that they do and give them a little something to kick-off the school year with,” said BI-LO Store No. 5103 Director Tammy Mertins.

The Winn-Dixie team at store No. 433 in Phenix City, Ala. donated 500 reusable bags to students and teachers at LaDonia Elementary School during its back-to-school Open House event. Students sometimes return to school without a bag for books and supplies, and, Store Director Jason Ferrell said he felt it was important for every student to have a bag on the first day of school.

“Students are required to bring home a lot of papers and books on the first day of school, so we wanted to make sure they were able to carry all of it home to their parents,” said Ferrell.

Winn-Dixie store No. 445 in Hoover, Alabama partnered with Taxx Managers to give away school supplies to local needy students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. The goal of the event was to support local students with tools they need to be successful in the classroom.

In Orlando, Florida, associates from store No. 2229 were on hand at a Back to School Expo to welcome University of Central Florida students back to campus. They offered returning students donut holes in the morning and sandwiches for lunch in the afternoon. They also distributed more than 200 reward cards to give students a back to school discount in their neighborhood store.

Associates from Winn-Dixie store No. 726 in St. James City, Florida visited Pine Island Elementary to participate in the school’s open house celebrations. Store Director George Williamson and his daughter Morgan, a former Pine Island Elementary student, passed out Winn-Dixie drawstring bags, activity books, bicycle flashers, cookies and store coupons.

Some 10 Miami region Winn-Dixie stores welcomed teachers back to school with breakfast and lunch buffets.  Store Directors were eager to visit their educational partners to drop off delicious platters and dishes from their bakery and produce departments, as well as meet and greet with staff as they prepare their classrooms for their students. Participating Winn-Dixie stores included: No. 290, No. 254, No. 353, No. 359, No. 242, No. 370, No. 246, No. 285, No. 286 and No. 249.

Through donations and gifts, Bi-Lo Holdings is proud of its stores and associates who have offered their time, and shown their support, within the communities we serve and local schools we support. The company looks forward to continuing its effort to support education, and hunger relief initiatives surrounding school children in need.
