Pageland, S.C. makes its claim to fame at the town’s Watermelon Festival.

Pageland, S.C. has been nicknamed the Watermelon Capital of the World, and the community takes that title to heart. Every July, the city welcomes thousands of visitors from all over the Southeast to its Watermelon Festival in celebration of the pink, juicy fruit.

On July 18 and 19, town officials and event organizers roped off four blocks and invited vendors and watermelon-lovers to fill the streets. Attendees enjoyed a parade, pageants, music, food, crafts, amusement park rides, fireworks and more.

Situated at the entrance of the Festival, guests were greeted by associates from BI-LO Store No. 5637. A BI-LO booth enticed guests with a variety of delicious treats, including candied apples, McLeod Farms peaches, pork skins, popcorn, peanuts, beverages and, of course, watermelons.

It’s not the Pageland Watermelon Festival without a seed spitting contest and a watermelon eating contest, so BI-LO Store No. 5637 played its part by donating the watermelons. Additionally, the store donated roses for a beauty pageant.

On the 19th, a parade was the highlight of the day. Store No. 5637 associates rode in the parade dressed as BI-LO mascot characters Polly Peach and Becky Broccoli. Later, they met children at the store for photos.

“We all love watermelons, but we love getting out into the community even more,” said Sydney Baker, service area manager at BI-LO Store No. 5637. “This festival is something we’re always looking forward to, and we’re proud that our store has been a part of it for more than a decade.”
