Winn-Dixie and Pepsi helped make Pompano Beach, Florida, resident Sam Roman’s dream come true last month.

Roman not only won a $1,000 shopping spree at his neighborhood Winn-Dixie – No. 311 in Davie, Florida -- but when he took to the aisles Aug. 25, a celebrity professional basketball player was there to enjoy the trip with him. Miami HEAT player Chris “Birdman” Andersen joined Roman during the second annual Dr. Pepper/Crush Shop with a Player program, and with his wife, Erin, and children Maximus and Ariya, Roman packed 14 carts full of groceries.

Before he hit the aisles,Roman got a chance to have a one-on-one conversation with Andersen, sharing his passion for the HEAT and telling Anderson that he entered the text-to-win sweepstakes because his son recognized “Birdman” on a store display.

“It’s not every day that we get to share an unforgettable experience with a customer, so it was humbling to join Sam and his family during this special occasion,” said store director Eli Manresa. “It feels great to partner with Pepsi and the HEAT to bring this level of excitement into our store.”

Roman’s first priority on his shopping spree was to stock up on meat to share with his friends and family during a barbecue the following weekend. From there, Roman and Andersen packed cart after cart with his family’s favorite food, as well as much needed diapers and household supplies. Both Roman and Andersen received help during the shopping spree from Miami HEAT mascot Burnie, who frantically stormed the shelves to grab additional items. As they pulled into the checkout lane, Roman and Andersen high-fived to a job well done before loading the groceries into multiple cars.

“I’ve never won anything like this in my life, so I want to thank Winn-Dixie, Pepsi and obviously ‘Birdman’ for making this such an unbelievable afternoon,” said Roman. “Shopping with ‘Birdman’ was a truly special experience and my son had the opportunity to meet his favorite Miami HEAT player; something he will remember forever.”
