The Bi-Lo Holdings Foundation presents a $15,000 grant to the YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga (Tenn.) to support the YMCA Feeding Program.

Last year, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga (Tennessee) helped area schoolchildren get access to needed nutrition through the summer, serving more than 36,000 meals at more than 50 sites. This summer, the program expanded its services to more than 70 sites, serving 100,000 meals to more than 2,200 children.

With program participation increasing each year, so does the need for additional funding. To help, the Bi-Lo Holdings Foundation awarded a $15,000 grant to the YMCA Feeding Program. Area BI-LO store directors presented a check Aug. 14 to representatives of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga and children of the Shelia Jennings Community Center, one of the feeding sites located in downtown Chattanooga.

Food insecurities continue to be an issue for youth in the United States, with one out of five children struggling with hunger. While Federal nutrition programs play a critical role in helping children build healthy minds and bodies, statistics show that these resources are not reaching all of the kids who need them.To help combat this issue in the Southeast, the YMCA and partner organizations created a program that gives local children a safe place to play, while ensuring access to fresh, healthy foods.

Since 2010, the Y’s Summer Feeding Program has operated feeding sites across southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia, providing children who qualify for free or reduced lunch at school with guaranteed access to meals and snacks when school is not in session.

“The Y and BI-LO share the belief that every child deserves access to nutritious meals and a healthy start to life, “said BI-LO District Director Daryl Massey. The Y and partner organizations are doing so much to influence the positive development of our local youth and we are proud to support their efforts.”
