Winn-Dixie stores in Miami-Dade and Broward counties have teamed up with FLIPANY to host Cooking Matters,a local nutrition-education program that teaches families how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a budget.

FLIPANY’s Cooking Matters events have welcomed more than 30 attendees to various stores during each tour, explaining how to develop healthier eating habits by learning how to read food labels, determining nutritional ingredients and learning about whole-grain products. During the intimate shopping sessions, participants are led through each department in the store, creating a hands-on experience to determine inexpensive and tasty meal options that can contribute to improved personal health.

“We greatly appreciate Winn-Dixie’s support to help create healthier communities through proper education,” said Jennifer Hoffman, FLIPANY director of programs and grants. “We look forward to expanding our partnership to teach more South Florida residents how they can create balanced, nutritious diets at their neighborhood Winn-Dixie.”

FLIPANY’s most recent Cooking Matters in the Store event took place May 6 at Winn-Dixie store No. 246 in Miami Gardens, Fla. Participants were challenged to create a healthy meal, including all five food groups, for less than $10. Winn-Dixie store No. 246 Director Ron Daniels said the store’s partnership with FLIPANY is a valuable one.

“We were thrilled to work with FLIPANY to help make our community a better place through their healthy initiatives,” he said. “As a company, we’re always looking for ways to educate our shoppers on how to create healthy and nutritious meals on a budget, and these tours do just that.”
