Kate McDonald of Cooking Matters, right, share shopping tips with WDSU reporter and anchor Randi Rousseau.

In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans, Winn-Dixie is participating in the organization’s “Cooking Matters” program, providing educational and health-conscious nutrition information, hands-on food preparation techniques and tips for shopping on a budget.

On Jan. 17 Kate McDonald of Cooking Matters came to Winn-Dixie No. 1472 to give shopping pointers to WDSU TV reporter/anchor Randi Rousseau. McDonald explained the program, pointing out options for making healthy food choices. She also compared fresh and frozen food items and explained to Rousseau and her television audience how to read nutrition labels.

After the tour, Rousseau took the Cooking Matters $10 challenge, where she had to purchase items to prepare one meal for her family for $10 or less. By using her Winn-Dixie Reward Card, Rousseau successfully passed two other challenges - shopping for the ingredients needed to make healthy breakfast burritos for less than $6 and shopping for the ingredients needed to make a healthy stir-fry dish for less than $8.

Winn-Dixie and Cooking Matters have big plans in motion for coming weeks. Winn-Dixie will contribute to the program by incorporating elements of an ongoing partnership with LiveWell Louisiana, an organization that shares many of Cooking Matters’ goals. Winn-Dixie plans to use other existing partnerships with schools, hospitals, assisted living facilities and foundations to hold Cooking Matters classes on budgeting and healthy eating habits at various stores in the New Orleans region.
