Nearly 2,300 runners, walkers and strollers braved the rainy weather to participate in the 37th Annual Daily’s Ortega River Run. As a silver sponsor, Winn-Dixie store No. 123 helped fuel the runners with water and snacks as they raced to support the school’s student financial aid and scholarship programs.

Winn-Dixie and store No. 123 showed passionate caring for the Jacksonville, Florida community through the silver sponsorship of the 37thAnnual Daily’s Ortega River Run, Feb. 29.

More than 2,300 pairs of running shoes braved the rainy weather and pounded wet pavement for the run, which benefited the financial aid and scholarship programs at St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School.

The store supplied mountains of snacks for the runners, walkers and stroller-pushing parents, including bananas, muffins and bagels along with water to fuel them before and after the race.

"We are so grateful for the amazing support Winn-Dixie has provided over the years to Daily's Ortega River Run,” said Brad Jessen, St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School Director of Development. “Our participants are thankful for the healthy refreshments that are always waiting for them at the finish line.”

The race, which began in 1978, is a Grand Prix sanctioned event, with a 1-mile fun run and a 5-mile run and walk race, along with a festive street fair at the school with games and giveaways. The course wound over bridges and along tree-lined streets through the historic Ortega neighborhood. Over the past 37 years, the race has grown from 1,500 to 2,300 runners and has become a favorite run for participants throughout northeast Florida and the country.
