Harveys Supermarket store No. 1664 in Macon, Georgia, teamed up with local TV station WGXA-TV, Aug. 27 for the monthly “Drive Away Hunger” food drive.

The Middle Georgia Community Food Bank reports a high demand for food donations and says the organization ships 30,000 pounds of food on an average day. The food bank helps other non-profits supply food to area residents and distributes to 24 Middle Georgia counties. In order to help “drive out hunger” in Central Georgia, WGXA-TV hosts monthly food drives at various locations within the community.

WGXA, an ABC affiliate, encouraged viewers during its newscast to stop by Harveys Supermarket No. 1664 and donate non-perishable food items to help support the hunger battle. Customers and residents flooded the parking lot, bringing canned goods from home and purchasing items to donate at the store. They also made cash contributions to the effort. Harveys associates also contributed to the food drive effort.

“We were honored to partner with WGXA-TV and be the location for the food drive,” said Harveys Store No. 1664 Assistant Store Director Jerome Smith. “We are grateful for the opportunity we had to shine a light on the severe issues of hunger our community faces, as well as other parts of Georgia.”
