On Dec. 12, Winn-Dixie teamed up with the front-office volunteer program of the Marlins professional baseball team, Marlins Ayudan, to take part in their annual Day of Civic Engagement. Several Winn-Dixie stores throughout the Miami region welcomed more than 100 Marlins Ayudan volunteers, comprised of Miami Marlins players and staff, including President David Samson, who touched customers’ hearts through random acts of kindness.

To help spread cheer during the season of giving, Winn-Dixie provided gift cards to each visiting team, which were used to ease the stress of the holidays by paying random customers’ grocery bills at checkout. The players and volunteers also purchased carts of food and donated their time to bagging groceries and assisting customers with their shopping. Winn-Dixie Miami Region Vice President Tony Jorges says partnering with Marlins Ayudan was an uplifting experience for store associates.

“Everyone can use a little help around the holidays, so it was heartwarming to see our customers’ faces light up when the Marlin Ayudan team paid for their groceries,” he said.

Winn-Dixie and Marlins Ayudan also took their engagement outside the store and into the classroom. To help give back to their young fans and support education, Miami Marlins team members and Marlins Ayudan volunteers purchased school supplies and children’s toys at Winn-Dixie stores and hand-delivered them to local schools. Winn-Dixie also provided cookie platters to the organization for school students and staff to enjoy.

“Our partnership with Winn-Dixie is yet another example of the inspirational connections we can make with our neighbors when we work together,” said Senior Director of Community Outreach Angela Smith. “It was a great feeling to see so many overjoyed faces and let our community know that we are there for them during the holiday season.”

The following stores enjoyed visits from Marlins Ayudan during their annual Day of Civic Engagement: store No. 203, store No. 204, store No. 226, store No. 236, store No. 290, store No. 306, store No. 311, store No. 336 and store No. 354.
